Our Story

It started with a book.

And a question we couldn’t stop asking: why don’t the givers ever get to receive?

Will Guidara’s Unreasonable Hospitality tells the story of a restaurant that became the best in the world — not through better food, but through an obsession with making people feel genuinely, unexpectedly seen. One story stood out: a guest mentioned offhand that they’d never had a New York hot dog. The team ran out and bought one, presented it between courses. The guest wept.

That story stayed with us. Not because of the hot dog — but because of the person sitting at that table. Someone who had traveled far, given so much, and in one unreasonable moment, felt completely seen.

The people we thought of

We started noticing the people in our own lives who fit that description. The friend who organizes the neighborhood food drive but never asks for help moving. The colleague who stays late for everyone else’s deadlines but downplays her own work. The parent who funds every dream but quietly set aside their own. These people are everywhere. And they share something: they’ve gotten so good at giving that they’ve stopped believing receiving is for them.

What we built

Treat People Special is a nonprofit built around a simple belief: that everyone deserves a moment designed entirely for them. Not a birthday card. Not a thank-you note. A real, thoughtful, unreasonable act of care — funded by people who believe, like we do, that the givers deserve to be given to.

Where we are now

We’re in our early days, based in the Pacific Northwest, and we’re just getting started. We’ve created a handful of proof-of-concept experiences — and every single one has confirmed what we suspected: these moments matter more than recipients expect. And they matter deeply to the people who make them possible, too.

Our Mission

“To fund small, meaningful experiences for people who consistently give to others — and rarely stop to receive.”
